Friday 2nd October

October 5, 2015/in Mr Spong's Blog/by sadleir2021

Wow – well September flew by in the blink of an eye, my oh my!! I am rhyming for a reason by the way – Mrs McIver announced the theme for this Year’s House Poetry Competition in assembly today. Children can gain points for every entry as well as individual prizes and the first overall House prize of the academic year.

This week saw Year 7s doing their CATs tests, not to see who will be Mr Mistoffelees in a drama performance but to check cognitive progress and allow us to make targets to check their progress.  The 7 boys also played their first football match of the season, narrowly losing their English Schools’ Cup match.  The Year 8s and 6s returned to a normal curriculum after the excitement of the previous week, although some of the 8s enjoyed their first outing as Sports Leaders.  As we are in October thoughts generally turn to Hallowe’en at the end of the month and I thought Year 5 had been getting in some early practice this week, however it turns out they had been making their own blood and looking at all the different bits within.

Some of the children got to be filmed during lessons this week, not as part of the new series of either Waterloo Road or Bad Education, but as part of the OTI programme for the staff.  After the initial nerves of being on camera were overcome, things carried on as normal and the feedback from the mentor was all positive.  If you have any questions about the OTI programme then please contact me.

Next week is a busy week with author visits, sports fixtures, Year 8 Enterprise groups begin trading and the small matter of Open Evening where we open our doors to prospective parents and use our current crop of Ralphies to show off how brilliant they are.

Friday 25th September

October 4, 2015/in Mr Spong's Blog/by sadleir2021

Well what an enterprising week it turned out to be.  It was planned as a week where our Year 8s and Year 6s were off developing independent thinking, teamwork and personal resilience skills in either setting up businesses or at the outdoor activity centre.  However as it turned out it wasn’t only the children who had to do some quick thinking at the end of the week.

First to Enterprise Week for the Year 8s, there will be more detailed write ups on the website from Miss Devine who led the week and by some of the Year 8s; however in a nutshell the week started with some team building exercises led by the army, then there were a series of activities focusing on how to set up and run a business culminating in their Dragons’ Den pitches for investment.
image-300x224 (2)Finally they all had some physical and mental problem solving challenges to puzzle through on Friday, it was an incredibly successful week with all the children buzzing with enthusiasm and full of great ideas and the Dragons all said how impressed they were with the slickness of the presentations and their knowledge of their businesses.  Now is the hard part – using the investment to turn the ideas into profit!!

Dragons' Den pitches Problem Solving Team

The Year 6s arrived on Monday armed with suitcases and teddies ready for a big adventure – off to PGL (Ask your children what it ‘allegedly’ stands for) in Liddington.  Again there will be a report and some photos posted on the website but when I spoke to Miss Dobson on her return she told me that the children were all brilliant but what goes on tour stays on tour!!

That should be the end of the story but oh no, sadly there was late drama when one of the coaches had a catastrophic engine failure on the M25. Some of the children had to wait for another coach to come and collect them – easily done in Friday night traffic!! Again the children were fantastic, taking it all in their stride as an extended part of the adventure.  I cannot praise the staff enough for their quick thinking and calmness in dealing with a potentially dangerous situation and the children too deserve huge credit.  It was a day to truly be proud of my Ralphies – big and small!!

The 6s who remained in school also had a fun packed week being learning mentors for our Year 5s as well as making some wonderful concoctions in the Food Tech room.

Fingers crossed for a ‘normal’ drama free week next week!!

September 20, 2015/in Mr Spong's Blog/by sadleir2021

This week saw the start of clubs; 99.9% of all the girls in the school therefore went to netball club and there were a good number at Key Stage 3 rugby. Other clubs and things are ongoing so please get your children to check the boards for information; we are always on the look out for new and interesting ideas and/or people to run clubs for the children so please speak to Mr Morgan if you would like to get involved.

We had our first sports fixture of the year with our Year 8 boys comfortably winning their first round match in the English Schools Cup against Etonbury Academy.

Preparation was the key focus of the week: the staff were making early preparations for the first Cross-Curricular Day as well as beginning to think about Open Evening; the Year 6 team and children were getting excited (ready) for their residential trip to PGL next week; the Year 8s were preparing vegetables for their Food Tech lessons and thinking ahead to all the activities of Business Enterprise week; the Year 5s were preparing themselves for what they thought were extra computing lessons but turned out to be online baseline assessments; and the Year 7s…well…i’m sure they were preparing for something.

Assembly themes this week started with Mr Fuller talking about teamwork and how it can support people within a school and their wider lives, he didn’t bring in his guitar and sing, maybe next time.  Friday’s assembly focused on British Values – a theme that will run throughout assembly and PSHE lessons this year – and in particular this week, tolerance.  Ask your children about what things we should be tolerant of in school.  On Thursday morning Reverend Alan and one of his youth workers explained to all our Key Stage 3 children about the new youth club taking place in the community centre every Sunday.

Finally I end with a plea (or few); my senior team and I have been out this week after receiving reports both about the parking of cars and the driving around school.  People are using Perowne Way to pull u-turns before dropping off outside school, which is making crossing the road for our pupils and all those trying to get to RDC increasingly dangerous.  We encourage our parents to drop their children off at the community centre and then the children can walk the short distance into school using the crossing; as a working parent I understand the time pressures on getting to work but an extra couple of minutes to drop off safely, for everyone, is surely worth it.  On the subject of parking please can we also be considerate when parking in Perowne Way and Britannia – considerate of people’s driveways and of pedestrians.

It is supposed to be a lovely weekend, I’m sure like many of you I will be spending it ferrying my children from their various sporting and social activities – I remember playing sport and having a social life..a long time ago – so I will at least be trying to enjoy the weather!!  Hopefully many of you will be supporting RDC’s Family Fun Day on Saturday, helping to raise money for their new learning space – which will be amazing!!

September 12, 2015/in Mr Spong's Blog/by sadleir2021

The end of the first proper week – everyone survived!!

It was an important week at the end for our Year 8s, the first of many for them in their final year at Ralph Sadleir – the announcements of the House Officials.  This year we will be looking to make their roles more prominent within the school, they are our greatest advertisement on Open Days as well as being tremendously helpful.  However it is their role House Officials 2015-16within the school as leaders that I will be looking to develop – more to come in future Blogs.  The quality of applications from all the pupils was excellent, Mr Morgan said they were collectively the best he has received for some time, making the decisions in some cases very, very difficult indeed and in fact many of the staff had a read through the applications and an input into the discussion before they were finalised.

Next week the children wont be the only people doing some formalised learning in school as five brave teachers become pupils again as they participate in an Outstanding Teacher Development Project, not only will this see benefits to all the children in the school but also all the staff too, as they will be sharing their new found knowledge through staff meetings and training days.

These are all initiatives and ideas that I am beginning to introduce as I find my feet and grow into Headship, your feedback is always welcome and I will be announcing the dates and times of this term’s Parent Forums later on this week, if you can’t make them then I am also looking into the possibility of setting up Conference Call for working parents to dial in.

Around school this week there were outbursts of rock music, concerned I entered the classrooms expecting to see the staff and pupils practising their air guitar skills; thankfully it is part of a times tables learning programme that we are using in school.  Either the children will get better at their multiplication fact recall or they will all become Bon Jovi fans – not sure which will be more beneficial in their lives!!

Have a great weekend.

Friday 4th September

September 7, 2015/in Mr Spong's Blog/by sadleir2021

Welcome back everybody.

As I returned to school on Tuesday, the place was a hive of activity – admin staff getting the children’s timetables sorted; teachers busily preparing classrooms; Mr Verderame and his site team painting and cleaning; and builders, hard at it trying to finish all the work we have had done renovating the outside of the building.  I tentatively asked if all would be finished for the start of term and received reassuring nods – ‘Good’ I thought, because there is no way I could keep the school closed for over-running building works…I clearly still have a lot to learn as a Headteacher!!

Staff returned in earnest on Wednesday to continue prepping and undertake First Aid training, the school resembled something of a cross between ancient Egypt and a scene from Saving Private Ryan with people wandering around in bandages and slings.  Rest assured that should anyone now need medical assistance in school there are a whole host of people ready, willing and able to assist them; I am half expecting to enter a classroom on a learning walk to discover an entire class of children placed in the recovery position just so the teacher and assistant can practise!!

Thursday saw a scene of much excitement and drama.  First the excitement – Year 5s!!  They came in with beaming smiles and what was most pleasing was that they left pretty much the same way and they all returned on Friday so something must have gone well.  They spent the day acclimatising to their new surroundings, doing activities like a treasure hunt using school maps and getting to know you exercises with their new tutors.  Now the drama – no gas, which meant no food!!  Thankfully Mr Rowe and his team are a resourceful bunch and commandeered the Food Tech room to produce another Ralphies delicious delight – disaster averted.

And so to Friday – quite like these 4 day working weeks, only 2 of which with children, must mention it to the Governors – the return of the masses.  It was actually really nice to hear and feel the buzz of energy around school as it filled up because schools are very eerie places when there are no children in them.  Planners and timetables given out, suntans compared, summer holiday gossip exchanged…and that was just the staff!! Tutor time, break, assembly, lessons, lunch, few more lessons, home – sorted day one (two) done, only another 189 to go!!

My assembly focused on new beginnings and the fresh start a new school year can bring.  I introduced the new faces in school, most notably Mr Fuller the Deputy Head – you will have to ask your children for the analogy I used to introduce him.  I also challenged the children to think big and have big ideas for themselves this year, asking them to think about what they want to achieve and what they could achieve and what they need to do to achieve this.  I shall leave you with my favourite poem by Marianne Williamson which is where I drew my inspiration to ask the children to think big and also fits nicely with being ‘Proud to Achieve’.  Have a lovely weekend.

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be?  Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people will not feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do.  It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone and as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give others permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

Friday 22nd May

May 22, 2015/in Mr Spong's Blog/by sadleir2021

It’s done, my first half term as a Headteacher!! Not sure a week off is enough time to catch up on all the sleep I’ve missed out on but hey, I’ll be giving it a go!!  For those of you who read the local paper, skip past p20-21 this week, however keep an eye out in the rest of the paper as I’m not the only Ralphie in there this week.

This week it has been the Year 5’s turn to do assessments, whilst the Year 6’s had a fun architecture and construction workshop.  The Key Stage 3 children took part in the House Quiz on Wednesday, questions were compiled by Harvey, Josh W and Mia G and Mr Palmen was compere for the event.  Salisbury were the overall winners – clearly the most intelligent children in the school!!  If you think you are as smart as a 12/13 year old here are a selection of the questions (Answers to the House Quiz questions):

Q1:To within 50, how many dimples are there on a standard golf ball
Q2: What is the length of the current world record for the guinea pig long jump (+/- 5cm)
Q3: What are Red, Bubbles Chuck, Matilda, The Blues and Terence collectively known as?
Q4: What is missing from the following – Hepworth, Moore and Butler?
Q5: Which song begins with the following lyrics ‘This hit, That ice cold, Michelle Pfeiffer, That white gold’
Q6: Who sang the opening line on the 2014 do they know it’s Christmas single?
Q7: What are Paul Sinah, Mark Labbett, Anne Hegerty and Shaun Wallace collectively known as?
Q8:Who are Aleksandr Orlov, Sergei and baby Oleg?
Q9: What was the name of the 2010 World Cup octopus that it was said could predict outcomes of games.
Q10: If I scored a try and a conversion in rugby union, how many points would I have won in total?
Q11: What song did the staff perform to at this years Stars in their eyes?
Q12: How many of Harvey’s pigeon steps does it take to get from the exit of the lunch hall to the geography room? (+/-30)

Harvey has been a busy boy, organising the House Quiz, getting a Gold Certificate in the National Maths Challenge, carrying out experiments at GlaxoSmithKline (Click on the link for his write up) and winning the longest drive challenge in Year 8 boys golf.

My assembly this week looked at respect, what it is and why it is important.  The thought of the week was: ‘Respect – give it out to earn it back’  Miss Chandler rounded the week off with a though provoking assembly on plastics and their environmental impact and the need to recycle.

This week several 100% attendance certificates were given out to Tutor Groups which is good to see, please remember to complete a request form if you are wanting to take children out of school but bear in mind that these will only be authorised in exceptional circumstances.

More Merit Certificates were awarded this week and just to give you a quick update: 226 children have claimed a Bronze Certificate, 177 have their Silver; 91 a Gold; 29 have a Platinum; 8 have Diamond and 2 have made it to 100 merits and have received their Headteacher’s certificate.  After half term merits will be counted and Houses reaching certain milestones will receive rewards, however certificates must have been claimed in order to be eligible for the reward.

My closing gambit to the children today was to stay safe, have fun and to not deliberately annoy anyone, parents i’ve tried my best!!  Enjoy the break.

Friday 1st May

May 1, 2015/in Mr Spong's Blog/by sadleir2021

Week two – a proper five day week – is over!!

The biggest thing this week was Cross-Curricular Day on Thursday, always eagerly anticipated and thoroughly enjoyable.  Lots of different activities going on through the day: the Year 8’s were re-enacting the famous football match of the first world war and making propaganda posters; the Year 7’s got to burn food to check for calories; the Year 6’s made cous cous; and the Year 5’s did an orienteering course cunningly devised by Mrs Brown.

Our Year 8’s have certainly had a busy week what with taking part in the National School’s Maths Challenge and making muffins of their own recipe as part of their Food Technology assessment.  Some of the recipes/flavours were interesting, both sweet and savory choices and I know Miss Lumsden was impressed with both the ideas and their culinary skills.  The most intriguing came from Calwyn Bluemental with his recipe.  Sadly, even after being promised many tasters by many pupils, I didn’t get to try any – so they must have been good!!

Assemblies this week focused on May Day and the British traditions surrounding it on Wednesday; whilst today I introduced the children to some independent learning ideas based around what to do if they are stuck or ‘don’t get it’! Mrs O-D sparked the idea by showing a video  which all the children found hilarious, until we compared it to them in class.  So today I introduced the 5Bs to help you when you are stuck; the fifth is asking the ‘Boss’ who could be the teacher in school or a parent with homework, try asking your children what the other 4 B’s are.

Next week has lots of important events, beginning with Standon’s May Day celebrations on Monday; the General Election, which we will be discussing with the children this week; Bikeability for some Year 5’s; and of course the most importantly of all – Star Wars Day!!  If you are still a floating voter or just generally interested in which political party is ‘right’ for you, the the website – who should you vote for – might be of interest.

Finally, please remember that there is no school on Monday, so please enjoy the long weekend and if you are off to Standon May Day then don’t forget to visit the RSA stall.

Have a great weekend…and May the Fourth be with you!!

Friday 24th April

April 25, 2015/in Mr Spong's Blog/by sadleir2021

Well that’s week one done (thank goodness it was only a 4 day week!!)

It has seemed strange this week, lots of people keep asking me how my first day went or how was the first week, when actually I just see this as the beginning of my sixth term as a Ralphie – I’m not new!!  I’d like to thank everyone for their support during this time of transition, not least Miss Bickerstaff, who quite graciously keeps reminding me that ‘this is not your office any more’ when I turn right instead of keep on going!

Back to more important matters ie what the children have been up to and that starts back during the Easter holidays when our Key Stage 3 cricketers played in the regional final of the Lady Taverners competition and the indoor centre of Leicestershire.  All the girls performed exceptionally well although they didn’t manage to make it through to the National finals.

Continuing on a sporting theme, it was lovely to see so many Year 3/4 pupils from the District participating in the tag rugby festival on Thursday.  All the teams were ably supported by our 45 Sports Leaders and superbly refereed by Freman students.  Everyone involved certainly seemed to enjoy themselves, including Mrs Hesketh who was a being passionate parental supporter on the sidelines.

In school the highlight this week had to be the amazing smells wafting out from the Food Tech room as Year 7 made their pizzas – ham seemed a popular topping.  As the week drew to its close Miss Dobson and D6 delivered a wonderful assembly on the analogy of the journey of life being like a running race – a marathon not a sprint!!

It’s an important few weeks for the country as this week we had St George’s Day and in a fortnight we go to the polls in the General Election.  I shall leave you with an interesting political question, would St George be an eligible migrant in UKIP’s eyes?

Have a great weekend.

Friday 27th March

March 27, 2015/in Mr Spong's Blog/by sadleir2021

Not sure what all the fuss is about…this running a school lark is pretty easy!!!!!!!!

With Mrs Hinton and the Year 7s in France I got my chance to test drive my leadership skills ready for next term. As I drove away from school this evening (it was still standing) I was absolutely shattered – a good indicator that I’d been busy!!

I wasn’t the only one mind you as the Year 8s had been working with Anthony Glenn on their Shakespeare performance of Romeo and Juliet all week culminating in a performance to parents yesterday evening.  It was wonderful to see the children working as a group and really supporting one another.  It was an excellent showcase of their talents and I am sure that anyone who watched it, like me were suitably impressed and entertained.

Lots of sporting action has been going on lately, Mr Morgan and Miss Bickerstaff have been practically living in the minibus! District netball tournaments for the Key Stage 3 girls with the Year 7s reaching the final. The Year 5s also competed in the mixed High5 netball tournament winning lots of matches.  This afternoon our Year 6 boys were narrowly beaten by Greenaway in the 9-a-side District Cup Final after just failing to qualify for the County Cup Quarter-Finals.  We wish the girls luck next week in their county tournament.  The highlight of recent sporting endeavours has to be the Key Stage 3 girls winning the Lady Taverners County Cricket Tournament and progressing to the regional event to be held at Leicestershire CC with the winners of that playing at Lords.girls cricket team

My assembly today looked at mindsets and how they can either help or hinder your thinking and success. Perhaps try asking what the difference between a fixed and growth mindset is.  I showed everyone how using positive self-talk can change their outlook, instead of ‘I can’t do it’ use ‘I can’t do it yet’.  I showed them a clip of the greatest self-talker ever – Muhammad Ali – as well as some of the biggest failures to never give up – ask your children who some of them were.

Special congratulations should go to Katie S in Year 6 as she is the first pupil to get their Diamond certificate for 80 merits – superb effort!!

Next week the focus moves to the end of term and the end of an era as we say goodbye to Mrs Hinton as she retires for a well deserved break. She is the reason I came to the school, so you can either thank her or blame her, and I will always be grateful for the time I’ve had working with her.  For those of you worried about whether I am capable of filling her shoes…I won’t even bother trying as she is a size 5 and I am a size 10!!

Have a good weekend and remember life is not about waiting for the storms to pass but learning to dance in the rain☔️

Friday 6th February

February 6, 2015/in Mr Spong's Blog/by sadleir2021

The penultimate week of the half term, Christmas but a distant memory (Only 321 days to go by the way) and things in school are certainly hotting up.  Well, in Food Technology for certain as the Year 7’s and Year 8’s have been leaving school all week clutching their respective crumbles and bolognaise sauce – I am fairly certain this is not linked to a drop in attendence this week!!

Whilst things in school are hotting up outside is still freezing cold (It must’ve been cold as Mr Morgan was forced to put on tracksuit bottoms rather than his customary shorts) and huge kudos go to the children (And quite possibly the parents) coming to school with winter boots, wellies and big coats.  Despite the conditions clubs and House League matches carried on and some fine competition was engaged in, I will give an update on the league tables next week.

Several children have been out representing the school in various competitions this week: Year 6 went to the Sportshall Athletics; Year 7 were at the County Maths Challenge, where they came 6th out of 17 schools; and Year 8 were taking part in the Rotary Club Technology Challenge, more of which can be found in next week’s newsletter.  Mr Morgan said ‘Wednesday saw our U11 pupils take part in the NEH District Sports Hall athletics competition, held at Freman College sports hall.

6 schools were taking part this year making it the biggest competition we have had in this area. All of the pupils were excellent, giving 100% effort and doing their very best for the team. The girls finished in 3rd place, just 2 points from second place! The boys finished 5th with just 8 points separating 3rd and 5th.  A very close competition and some excellent experience for some of our KS2 pupils to take part in. Well done to all involved, excellent performances all round.’

Assembly focus thisweek has been on Togetherness and working with others and the introduction to Internet Safety Week, which the children will be finding out more about in Computing lessons next week.

Today has been all about the red, as the children and staff were allowed to wear something of the unholy colour and give a donation to raise money for the British Heart Foundation.  I am perfectly fine with today being red as long as the weekend is white!!
