Maths – Primary Maths Challenge
Pupils in Group 1 Maths take part in this National Competition. The questions are challenging and promote good mathematical thinking skills.
Maths – County Maths Challenge
Team of four pupils compete against other schools in the county. Questions cover all aspects of Maths and include an ‘observation’ and ‘estimation’ round.
Science – Visit by Mr Holt (amateur astronomer)
This is part of National Science Week. Mr Holt brings in his telescopes and talks about the night sky. Students can ask a lot of questions.
History – Egyptian Day
Students have the opportunity to take part in history themed tasks connected to their work on Ancient Egypt. They make pyramid nets and decorate them, they look at Egyptian science and how the pyramids were built and do art related projects following Egyptian style tomb paintings.
Sixty Year 5 pupils learn cycling skills in the playground followed by on-road skills. They also learn basic bicycle maintenance and safety.
English – Reading Role Models Workshop
To encourage pupils to read widely and show them the types of reading involved in future careers.
Geography – Settlement Walk
To show pupils first-hand what a settlement looks like and its features. To look at the architectural features of local houses.
Technology – Architecture Workshop
For pupils to learn techniques for how structures are constructed and what makes them strong.
PSHE – Crucial Crew
For pupils to learn about personal safety from a variety of professionals. e.g. Police, Paramedics
Year 7 and 8
English – Rib Valley Book Award
This is a transition project for Year 8 students, jointly with Freman College as a forum for keen readers.
English – The Word Magazine
This is produced each term by Year 8 students and sold in aid of their chosen charity.
Maths – Junior Maths Challenge
About 45 students in Year 8 sit the JMC – a national competition organised by the UK Maths Trust at the University of Leeds.
Maths – County Team Challenge
Teams of four students compete against other schools across the county.
Maths – Master Class (Freman)
A group of about 15 students join the same number of students from Edwinstree for a Maths Master Class led by Freman Maths Teachers.
Science – Science Club
Students meet once a week at lunchtime to allow keen scientists to follow interests outside the curriculum. This can lead to Crest Award – Bronze Level.
RE – Operation Christmas Child
Students are given the opportunity to make up a christmas parcel which is sent by the charity ‘Samaritans Purse’ to an underprivileged child somewhere in the world to help bring them a little love, some gifts and seasonal cheer at christmas time. Since 1990, the charity has touched the lives of some 94 million children. You can read more about the organisation here
Technology – Freman and Edwinstree Design Workshop
Six students visit Freman to learn how to use a CAD/CAM package to produce a 3D name plaque, which is made with the Freman CNC machine.
Royston Rotary Club
Three teams of four students design and build a solution to a problem provided by the Rotary Club. Other schools involved – Edwinstree Middle School, Roysia, Greneway, Freman College and Meridian School.
Music – Music Writing Workshop
In partnership with Herts Music Service, we have run several song writing workshops, including a rap workshop and another involving a garage band with Freman students supporting. Students enter the Herts Young Songwriter competition.
English – Anthony Glenn, The Tempest Workhop, Year 7
This activity is linked to the English curriculum. Pupils take part in acting workshops and a performance of Anthony Glenn’s one-man show.
Drama – Anthony Glenn, Romeo and Juliet, Year 8
Opportunity to work with an acting specialist on a Shakespeare play, culminating in a performance to parents.
All Year Groups
Book Fair and Book Week
All students have the opportunity to select some of the latest books for children.
World Book Day, students dress up as their favourite book character and share ‘Great reads’.
World Maths Day
Students take part in multi-cultural maths activities covering Egyptian Maths and maths and puzzles from around the world.
NATRE Spirited Arts Competition
The National Association of Teachers of Religious Education, run the spirited art competition every year. It enables students to think about and use artistic means to represent complex religious ideas. This year’s themes include: Jerusalem by William Blake, Open Mind! God – What if?, Windows of the Soul, Prayer – how and why? Have a look at their website to find out more information
Music – Choir
This is open to all year groups. The choir performs in the Autumn, Carol Service at St Mary’s Church in Standon, assembly concert in the Spring and a Summer Concert.
History – Black History Month
This takes place every October in the UK and is a month long celebration of Black and Asian men and women whose achievements may have previously been overlooked. You can find out more about Black History Month in the UK here
At Ralph Sadleir we have an interactive quiz which looks at the achievements of Black and Asian Scientists and Engineers.
English – Visits by/to meet poets and authors
To inspire adventurous reading and great writing.
English – House Poetry Competition
All pupils are encouraged to submit one or more poems based on National Poetry Day theme and win points for their house.
KS2 Easter Fete
KS2 plan an Eater Fete for KS3, which includes cakes, games and activities in order to raise money for various different charities.
