Year 5 into Year 6
Transition from Year 5 to 6 is managed through careful liaison between the Year 5 and Year 6 class teachers, passing on key information about the upcoming cohort. Year 6 classes are decided by the Year 5 staff according to friendships, the dynamics of the class and which new teacher would most suit the needs of each child. During transition day, pupils get to spend the day in their new Year 6 class and carry out several ‘getting to know you’ activities. They will also take part in an English lesson and a Maths lesson with their new Maths teacher.
When pupils reach the end of Year 6, class teachers liaise closely with the head of Year 7 and the KS3 tutors to pass on academic and pastoral information about pupils. New tutor groups are decided by the head of Year 7, in collaboration with Year 6 class teachers. The R and S bands for English and Maths are discussed by staff with the head of department. Other teaching groups are decided by the KS3 teachers. See the Year 7 information for details of what happens on transition day.
In order to monitor transition across all year groups, staff meet at the beginning of the academic year for an update on pupils. There is also a parent drop-in for all parents to meet their child’s new tutor.
