As part of our English lessons, Year 5 continued the theme of Roald Dahl, (started in their first schools) and studied the book Fantastic Mr Fox. Once we had read the book we then compared it to the film. Then following our acting experience provided by looking at Shakespeare’s A Midsummers Night’s Dream and working with the actor Anthony Glenn. We decided that we would put on a play of Fantastic Mr Fox.
Each class auditioned for different roles and the play was cast just before half term, with the lines being sent home to learn for return to school. Every child in Year 5 had a role to play. On returning to school we had six school days to rehearse the play and put on a performance.
Mr Mikelsons, our drama teacher, helped to work out the staging of the production and also created the wonderful masks. Volunteers from Year 8 helped to cut out all the masks.
The day before the performance we practised the whole play through for the first time and added music and other sound effects.
Amazingly on Wednesday 13th November we put on two performances of our play; One for the Year 4 children from Roger De Clare and Jenyns Schools; The other for parents and friends after school on Wednesday.
The Year 5 put on two terrific performances, showing great development in their character portrayal and independence.
Here are a few of the comments that the Year 5 ‘s have written about the performance.
“We were marvellous but I think that some people could have been a bit louder. “
“We performed to Jenyns and Roger De Clare. I was really nervous in case I mucked it up for everybody.”
“Everybody in Year 5 really enjoyed it and I am really looking forward to the next play”
“ I think that everyone that came to watch really enjoyed it. We all worked really hard and only had a little bit of time to practise. We are very grateful for the number of people that came and made nice comments about our acting.”
“In my opinion it went well but we could have tweaked a few scenes. Overall it was quite good and everyone should be proud.”
The Year 5 team are certainly very proud of the Year Group and would like to thank everyone for their support.
