Maths
At Ralph Sadleir, we have developed a comprehensive and engaging Mathematics curriculum based on the principles and resources provided by White Rose Maths. Our curriculum aims to provide students in Key Stage 2 and 3 with a solid foundation in mathematical concepts, skills, and problem-solving abilities, enabling them to become confident and proficient mathematicians.
Key Stage 2 (Years 3-6):
In Key Stage 2, our Mathematics curriculum is designed to build upon the mathematical knowledge and skills acquired in Key Stage 1. It focuses on developing students’ fluency in number sense, calculations, and applying mathematical concepts to real-life situations. We ensure a balanced coverage of the following areas:
Number and Place Value: Students will deepen their understanding of place value, including larger numbers and decimal place value. They will develop efficient strategies for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Calculation: Students will refine their mental and written calculation skills, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division methods. They will also learn about fractions, percentages, and decimals.
Geometry: Students will explore properties of shapes, angles, and symmetry. They will develop spatial reasoning skills and understand the properties and classification of 2D and 3D shapes.
Measurement: Students will develop their understanding of units of measurement, including length, weight, capacity, and time. They will also learn about perimeter, area, and volume.
Statistics: Students will explore data handling, including collecting, interpreting, and presenting data in various formats such as tables, graphs, and charts. They will also learn to analyze and draw conclusions from data.
Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9):
In Key Stage 3, our Mathematics curriculum builds upon the foundations laid in Key Stage 2, further developing students’ mathematical thinking and problem-solving abilities. Our curriculum covers the following areas:
Number and Algebra: Students will deepen their understanding of number operations, including fractions, decimals, percentages, and ratios. They will also explore algebraic concepts, such as equations, expressions, and sequences.
Geometry and Measures: Students will study properties of angles, lines, polygons, and circles. They will explore transformations, congruence, similarity, and trigonometry. They will also investigate measurement concepts, including perimeter, area, volume, and surface area.
Statistics and Probability: Students will learn to analyze and interpret data using a variety of statistical techniques. They will understand probability concepts, including theoretical and experimental probability, and use them to solve problems.
Ratio and Proportion: Students will explore the concept of ratio and develop an understanding of proportionality, including direct and inverse proportion. They will apply these concepts to solve real-life problems.
Mathematical Reasoning: Students will develop their problem-solving and logical reasoning skills through engaging activities and mathematical investigations. They will learn to communicate mathematical ideas effectively and justify their solutions.
Throughout both Key Stage 2 and 3, our Mathematics curriculum emphasizes the development of mathematical fluency, logical thinking, problem-solving, and critical reasoning skills. We strive to create a positive and inclusive learning environment that fosters a love for mathematics and equips students with the necessary mathematical knowledge and skills to succeed in their academic and everyday lives.
