Personal, Social, Health, Economic Education (PSHE)

PSHE is the foundational subject for realizing our motto: “Students of today, Citizens of tomorrow.” It equips students with the life skills, emotional intelligence, and critical understanding necessary to navigate personal challenges and contribute positively to society.

The curriculum is designed to instil profound responsibility for personal safety, health, and ethical decision-making. Students gain the knowledge to manage their finances, understand the law, and proactively maintain their physical and mental well-being, ensuring they are prepared for independent life.

Through the critical study of diverse relationships, emotional literacy, and community issues, PSHE cultivates deep respect and kindness. Students learn to recognize, value, and support the dignity and well-being of others, fostering a compassionate and inclusive outlook essential for a harmonious society.

PSHE builds confidence by encouraging students to assert themselves, set healthy boundaries, and articulate their needs and opinions effectively in sensitive situations. They develop the determination to set personal goals, seek help when necessary, and navigate complex social and ethical dilemmas with resilience. This combination of self-management and social awareness ensures our students graduate as thoughtful, capable, and morally prepared citizens.

At Ralph Sadleir, we believe PSHE is important because:

Intent

At Ralph Sadleir School, our intent is to provide a comprehensive and outstanding Personal, Social, Health, and Economic Education (PSHE) curriculum that promotes the spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development of our students. We aim to equip our students with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to lead healthy, fulfilling lives, and to become responsible, respectful, and active members of society.

Our PSHE curriculum is designed to meet the needs of our diverse student population and is aligned with the most recent inspection framework set by Ofsted, ensuring we address the specific requirements and development areas highlighted. We have a clear vision and strategic approach to PSHE, with a focus on continuous improvement and regular assessment of impact.

Implementation

Comprehensive and Holistic Curriculum

Our PSHE curriculum is designed to be comprehensive, covering a wide range of topics relevant to the needs and concerns of our students. It is taught in a holistic manner, integrating subject areas such as health education, relationships and sex education (RSE), financial education, and citizenship education.

Statutory Requirements and Beyond

We ensure our curriculum fully meets the statutory requirements set by the Department for Education, including the updated requirements for RSE. However, we go beyond these requirements by providing additional opportunities for students to explore topics such as mental health, emotional well-being, and cultural diversity, ensuring their education is relevant and up-to-date.

Age-Appropriate and Sequential Learning

Our PSHE curriculum is carefully sequenced and designed to respect the age and maturity of our students. We have clear progression mapping across year groups, with each topic building on previous knowledge and skills. By delivering age-appropriate content, we ensure our students are equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to make informed decisions both now and in the future.

A Whole School Approach

PSHE is not just restricted to dedicated lessons; it permeates the entire school ethos. We believe that the promotion of positive values and attitudes is the responsibility of all staff members. Our dedicated PSHE team, which includes subject specialists and external advisors, works collaboratively with all staff to ensure consistent messaging and implementation throughout the school.

Partnerships and External Providers

We actively seek partnerships with external agencies and providers to enhance the quality and range of our PSHE provision. These partnerships allow us to deliver targeted workshops, and expose our students to real-world experiences. We carefully vet and select these external providers, ensuring their content aligns with our values and educational expectations.

Impact

High Levels of Engagement and Participation

Through our well-planned and engaging PSHE curriculum, we see high levels of student engagement and active participation. We use a blend of teaching strategies including group discussions, role-plays, interactive activities, and multimedia resources to capture students’ interest and encourage their involvement. This inclusive approach ensures that different learning styles and preferences are catered for, leading to increased participation and a higher level of understanding.

Well-Informed Students

Our PSHE curriculum provides students with accurate and up-to-date information in a safe and supportive environment. By utilizing a range of authoritative and trusted resources, we ensure our students receive reliable information on issues such as relationships, health, well-being, and social responsibilities. This empowers them to make informed decisions and develop positive attitudes towards themselves and others.

Our PSHE curriculum supports students’ personal development by promoting their emotional well-being, resilience, and self-esteem. Through targeted modules on mental health, emotional intelligence, and coping strategies, we enable students to develop the skills necessary to navigate challenges they may face during their school years and beyond. We provide a safe space for students to discuss personal issues and concerns, fostering a supportive and inclusive school community.

Positive Attitudes and Positive Contributions

Our PSHE curriculum actively promotes positive attitudes and values, encouraging our students to respect diversity, embrace inclusivity, and develop good citizenship skills. Through exploring concepts of social justice, equality, and human rights, we aim to develop compassionate and responsible young individuals who are aware of their role as active citizens in society. Our students develop an understanding of the world around them, demonstrating empathy, and making positive contributions within their local and global communities.

Regular Monitoring and Evaluation

We have established a robust system to monitor and evaluate the impact of our PSHE curriculum. Regular confidence checkers, surveys, and feedback mechanisms enable us to gather valuable insights and make evidence-based improvements. We actively involve students, parents, and staff in the evaluation process to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the impact our PSHE provision is having on the well-being and development of our students.

Overall, our intent, implementation, and impact statements for PSHE at Ralph Sadleir School demonstrate our commitment to delivering an outstanding PSHE curriculum that meets the needs of our students, promotes their personal development, and prepares them to lead healthy and fulfilling lives in the 21st century.
