Friday 25th April

April 25, 2014/in Mr Spong's Blog/by sadleir2021

A warm (well it has been most days) welcome back to everyone, I hope you had a good Easter: whether you were away; enjoying family time; or just eating chocolate eggs!!

The summer term always seems so far away at the beginning of an academic year but then is upon you and over before you know it!!  The children are looking at new topics across the curriculum and there will be more of that to come in the following weeks.

Year 7 and 8 had a visit from Airbus Space & Defence Ltd. on Thursday which was all about what the company does, what the engineers do and the projects they work on.  Olly B in Year 8 said, “I found it very interesting. It has definitely opened up some new career opportunities for me.”

Sportwise the Year 6 boys football team beat Greneway 2-1 to hold onto the North East Herts U11 District trophy, goals were scored by Noah P and Austen G. District photo2 Hopefully this will stand them in good stead for the final’s night of the Wix Trophy, which is on the 7th of May at St Albans City’s ground (5.30pm kick off), please come along and support the boys if you can.   Cricket and rounders clubs are up and running too.

Sadly I have had to cancel the Dad’s House football tomorrow, hopefully the appetites have been whetted and we can run one in the future.

We had two assemblies this week with an antipodean perspective – Mr Mikelsons reminded us that we have links and can make links everywhere (Who has a jigsaw piece to link to yours?); then Mrs Brown reminded us of the significance/importance of ANZAC Day today and the more positive of Australian characteristics – courage, resilience, teamwork (mate-ship) and a good sense of humour.

Tonight there is the Quiz Night being run by Mrs Butler, Mrs Coppen and Mrs Bush to raise money for various cancer charities, hopefully it will go well and the teachers’ teams don’t come last!!

Friday 4th April

April 4, 2014/in Mr Spong's Blog/by sadleir2021

It’s finally here – the end of term, the end of my second term and how time has flown – the Year 5’s are nearly 6’s; the Year 6’s are almost starting Key Stage 3; the Year 7’s are practically Year 8’s; and…well the Year 8’s have virtually, sadly…well…gone!!

But enough of the near future and let’s return to the now.  I feel this is getting a bit of a repetitive starter but we have had another busy week, Mrs Hinton has been writing her end of term report for Governors and remarked how long it was taking her because of just how much has been going on!

Congratulations to our Year 6 boy’s football team who made it through to the Wix Competition Finals (Effectively the schools’ county cup competition).  They played in the quarter-final stage on Wednesday at Wheatfields School in St Albans.  It was a group phase with the boys playing 3 matches against St Columba’s (3-0), Boxmoor (3-2) and Longmeadow (5-0).  We won all 3 games and our goal scorers on the night were Dominic G, 3 Austin G 4, Luke C 2,  Noah P & Austin C with 1 each.  The whole squad were fantastic and were a credit to our school.

All week the children have been running their Sport Relief Miles during lunch time and sponsor money has been coming in.  On the subject of Sport Relief, the air was thick and smoggy around school yesterday, not with sand from the Sahara but with sugar from all the amazing entries to the Great Ralph Sadleir Bake Off.  Some of the entries were phenomenal and Mary Berry would have been reaching for the superlatives, there were: chocolate ones, buttercream ones, sweet covered ones, multi-coloured ones, all manner of shapes and sizes – check out the website for all the photos.  The School Council took to their role as judges with relish, marking each cake for appearance and taste. The winners overall were Florence S – Key Stage 2; Abigail F – Key Stage 3; and Mrs Willis – Adult.  Over £175 has been raised in total from both the entry forms and the children buying the cakes at the end of the day.  Thank you so much for your generosity.

Assembly today was a whirlwind of certificates and announcements of achievements, congratulations to Karys H and Amelia F in Year 5 on gaining their Platinum Merit Certificates.  Salisbury won the House Science Quiz.

And so to the Easter holidays, it is a time for things to come to an end and for new beginnings, so aptly we say goodbye to Mr Aylett and Miss Wagstaff then hello to Mrs Collins and (Welcome back) to Mrs Hanson.

I shall leave you with the wisdom of Ludwig Wittgenstein ‘If people did not do silly things, nothing intelligent would ever get done and teachers would be out of a job.’

Have a great holiday.
