Bake Off 2016!

March 22, 2016/in General news/by sadleir2021

There was a very pleasant aroma of cake, cookies and lots of chocolate wafting around Ralph Sadleir School on Thursday 17th March.

The Ralph Sadleir

Bake Off 2016 had kicked off with an abundance of fantastic and impressive culinary creations.

The School Council, led by Mrs Hesketh, had the task of tasting and judging the cakes to decide on winners in four categories: Best

Tasting Cake, Best Biscuit, Best Looking Cake and Overall Showstopper. The winners were:

Best Looking Cake – FreDSC_0154ya W (Year 6)

Best Tasting Cake – Olivia R-B (Year 7)

Best Biscuit – Emelia G (Year 6) and Jess F (Year 8)

Overall Showstopper – Charlie A-S (Year 7)

Well done everyone, whether you entered cake or biscuit or whether you bought a piece of cake (or two??!!).

We raised a brilliant £270 for Sport Relief.

You can see photographs of each entry on our Gallery page.

It’s a relief the week is finally over – Sports Relief that is!!

The School Council, led by Mrs Hesketh, organised a big bake off style competition and sale on Thursday.  There were so many amazing and delicious entries it was tough for them to judge the winners, however they were resilient and stuck to their task – congratulations go to:

Best Looking Cake – Freya W; Best Tasting Cake – Olivia R-B; Best Biscuit – Emilia G & Jess F; Overall Showstopper – Charlie A-S.

The Showstopper

The Showstopper

The big winner will be Sport Relief as we raised £275, which is enough for two children to attend primary and secondary school in Sierra Leone for a year and make a real difference in their lives – so thank you for your generosity!

The week started early for some Ralphies this week as the Choir, led by Miss Mason, spent the day at the Royal Albert Hall being part of the Hertfordshire Gala.  It was an amazing performance and the children were awesome! There will be a report on the day

Sporting focus was all about the girls this week with both the Year 7 and Year 8 netball teams competing in the District Championships and the Girls Futsal team coming 4th in the County Finals.

In school we had a whole host of Science Week activities, the Year 5s and Year 6s went out to visit Labs in action, the Year 6s especially enjoyed seeing the GSK labs and testing for banned substances.  The Year 7s and 8s took part in a satellite design project with the latter having a talk from AirbusUK about how they do it in real life.

Mrs Murfet’s assembly on Wednesday was based on her job in animal conservation before she became a teacher and her passion for Bonobos – ask your children what they are if you don’t know.  She also

talked to the children about ethics and how it can affect affect everyday life – thinking of the consequences before carrying out the actions.  Today’s assembly was designed to raise the children’s awareness of Autism as it is School Autism Awareness Week.

I’ve blinked and nearly a month has gone by!!

In that time there has been a whole host of sport with netball matches for all year groups with plenty of victories and passing double figures in goals in several of the matches – nice preparation for the District Tournaments this coming week.  Not to be out done there have been lots of District tournaments for the boys as well with the highlights being the Year 8 boys reaching the semis of the 6-a-side (Another highlight in this particular event was an ‘overhead’ kick wonder strike from Joe B!!) only conceding 1 goal in the whole thing and the Year 7 boys narrowly losing the cup final to Greneway, the Year 5s began their RS careers by beating the same school.  The Year 8 boys also just missed out on qualification to the County Finals of the rugby, being beaten by Barnwell school in the playoff – but being muddier by far!!

In school we’ve had World Book Day, the Book Fair, a Year 6 Parents’ Evening, an author visit and this week ended with Mrs Bingham introducing Science Week with an assembly and the House Quiz.  Congratulations to Wellington the winners and Freman who were Runner’s Up – thanks to the staff who gave up their lunch time to form a team and for ‘competing.’  The Year 8 maths team took part in the heats of the county Maths Challenge finishing a creditable 5th out of 20 schools.  Other assemblies have focused on the importance of words and using the right word and the importance of good attendance where I told the children that 90% (Which we’d all be happy with on any test) averaged over the four years would equate to missing half a day a week or nearly half a year of school.  I shared with them some research that showed that 17 missed days of a school a year meant a drop by one grade at GCSE’s and that if you got A*-Cs you would earn on average over £350,000 pounds more over the course of their working lives – just think of all the improved Mother’s and Father’s Day presents that would mean!!

Finally this week, the five, very brave and open minded teachers who participated in the Outstanding Teacher Intervention Programme completed their course and received their certificates and gave presentations, hopefully this is the start of the journey to improved learning for all pupils whom will pass into our school and become ‘Ralphies’.

Have a great weekend and remember the difference between try (6 Nations rugby reference) and triumph is just a little UMPH(sic)!!
