Friday 29th January

January 29, 2016/0 Comments/in Mr Spong's Blog /by sadleir2021

The end is nigh…well of January at least, only another 11 months until Christmas!!

Last week I was at the BETT show in London looking at what technology is offering for schools in the coming years; as we try to equip the school to allow the children the best experience possible.

I must start the summing up of the week by congratulating our Year 8 boys on reaching the last 8 of the National Playstation Schools Cup with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Westley Middle School.  We await the draw on Monday to see who (Or where) we will be playing next (Mostly to decide if the minibus can make it there and back!!).

This week assemblies were handed over to Year 5 and they did a fine job!! On Wednesday B5 tried to induct an honorary ‘Ralphie’ – John Logie Baird.  They talked about his achievements and how he displayed many of our values; and so I am happy to award the inventor of the television

his honorary status.  This has given me an idea and I have challenged other tutor groups to use their class assemblies as opportunities to choose a potential inductee of their own and I am thinking of creating a display on one of the notice boards around the school.

It was interesting that the inventor of the television was chosen on the week it was revealed that children now spend more time on devices than watching

TV.  Research firm Childwise found that on average 5 to 15-year-olds were spending three hours a day using the internet, compared to 2.1 hours watching TV.

A Cambridge University study published in September suggested an extra hour a day of television, internet or computer game time in Year 10 was linked to poorer grades at GCSE.  The researchers recorded the activities of more than 800 14-year-olds. When they analysed their GCSE results at 16, they found those who had spent an extra hour a day on screens saw a fall in results equivalent to two grades overall.

A regular feature of the Blog will be a subject specific focus, starting with MFL.  The Year 5s have been creating monsters and labelling their body parts; In Year 6 the children have been working on animals and colours; the Year 7s have been planning and taking part in their speaking assessments; and Year 8s have been revising sports and leisure activities.  Miss Hampshire has been busy herself, putting up french labels all round school.

Today D5 started our day by introducing us to people who inspire them; it was a wonderful assembly with a touching mix of mums, dads, aunties and great-grandads to world famous footballers, illusionists and paleontologists.  The reasons given were considered and thoughtful, explaining why each of them were inspiring to them.  It is important to have aspirations and role models who inspire us to achieve them.  A lot of our values are skills we want to equip our ‘Ralphies’ with in order to help them achieve their dreams and be successful in life, because life is 10% what happens to us and 90% how we react to it.

C5 Cake Sale – 28th Jan 2016

January 29, 2016/0 Comments/in General news /by sadleir2021

The dining room

became a little extra busy this week when C5 launched their Cake Sale. The class have worked together baking cakes to bring in to school to raise money to adopt a panda.

[justified_image_grid]

As you can see from the photos, there’s nothing like a Cake sale to bring in hoards of children (and staff) to raise a few pennies, and there was so much choice, from cookies to cupcakes to panda cookies and large cakes. Everyone was happy but no one more than C5.

They managed to raise a fantastic £121.75, enough for not just one adoption, but several. The class have chosen to adopt a panda, snow leopard, doormouse and a barn owl.

Well done C5 for fantastic team work.

So the end of the first (proper) week! Wow that extra day makes a difference!!

The Year 8s were back in full Enterprise mode on Monday, busily selling a whole range of tasty snacks at breaktime.   They are a long way to making their target figure and soon will be meeting with Miss Devine and Miss Mason to start planning the rewards trip.

Speaking of Miss Mason, she and the choir have been hard at it all week in preparation for their performance at the Royal Albert Hall.

Gymnastics has been the focus of PE this week, with plenty of group balances, cartwheels and round-offs on display in the school hall.

Congratulations must go to the Year 8 football team for reaching the last 16 of the English School’s competition with a resounding 4-0 victory over St Thomas Moore with Dom G and Luke C scoring the goals.

In Wednesday’s assembly Miss Hampshire introduced the concept of doing random acts of kindness – these weren’t necessarily limited to in school so hopefully your children will be doing these at home as well.  Today I used Andy Murray as an example of someone who had a dream and the things a successful learner does to achieve that dream – ask your children what some of them are.

“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You’re on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who’ll decide where to go…” Dr Seuss

Friday 8th January

Happy New Year to everybody, I hope you all had a fun-packed festive period.

It was lovely to see the collection of happy, smiling faces on Tuesday morning at

the start of a new term…but enough about the parents!!

A new year brings opportunities for

new goals and fresh starts and the idea of resolutions was the topic for F6’s assembly on Wednesday.

For my assembly this morning I used the focus of aspirations; and asked the children why it was important to have them. I used Steven Frayne as the example of how having a

dream can shape your future – ask your children who he is better known as.

As I walked around the school today I was startled by the appearance of some of the Year 7s who resembled Victorian chimney sweeps, it wasn’t auditions for Oliver but in fact some charcoal art. It has been a very creative start to the term with Year 8s taking on some product design in

Technology and lots of gymnastics in PE lessons throughout the school.

At Ralph Sadleir our resolutions are simple: to be proud of who we are and what we achieve.  I wish you all a very happy and healthy 2016 – only 351 days until Christmas!!
