Friday 16th March

March 17, 2018/in Mr Spong's Blog/by sadleir2021

This week was a special week in the history of Ralph Sadleir as we gave thanks to Mr Palmen in a special commemorative day.  Everyone looked fantastic in their red – for Lancashire and Arsenal – and the parents and children surpassed themselves with donations of cakes (which were continued to be sold on Friday and still to come on Monday!!) Thanks to your generosity we have raised a lot of money for the British Heart Foundation.

In the assembly we sang, reminisced and gave thanks.  For 10 years Mr P. dedicated his life to our school, helping children and supporting staff.  He was simply a great man which was reflected in all the fitting tributes that were written in his memorial book by pupils, parents and staff both past and present. Once a Ralphie always a Ralphie, and he will be forever remembered with the renaming of the computer suite.

The rest of the week was no less busy, Year 5 were rehearsing and refining their performing skills in readiness for next week’s production – there is something magical about when a group fills the school with song! If you are coming to watch you are in for a treat!!  Not content with performing a small group went off to a regional maths competition and came a respectable fourth.  The years 7s were filling the School in a different way, with lovely smells as their healthy couscous recipes came to life.

There was plenty of sport taking place too, the Key Stage 3 House Leagues are coming to the end of their season, each still with all to play for.  The KS2 boys football team had a comfortable win over Edwinstree; the Year 7 girls won the district Futsal and head to the County finals on Monday; the Year 7 boys came up against an inspired Saffron Walden side in the District Cup and didn’t make it through; and finally the Year 8 girls signed off from their netballing careers as Ralphies by winning the District Cup.

Next week is the penultimate of the term, where has this half term gone!! But as Mrs Campbell made us aware it is Science Week – so experiments galore will be taking place.  Come along and watch the Year 5 Alice production. It will also be the last chance to buy raffle tickets for the RSA Easter Egg Raffle.

Have a great weekend everybody.

Our value for this half term is a willingness to try, well we certainly showed a willingness to cram as much as humanly possible into a week!!

Our intrepid Year 6 team ventured over to PGL Liddington for a week of adventurous activities in the trees and on the lake, they returned on Friday night tired but very happy.  They will be sharing some of their experiences and pictures in a separate web page in the coming weeks.  The remaining Year 6s were equally as busy with the in-school programme, which included a very interesting trip to the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge – to see some amazing artwork and Roman/Greek artefacts – and making cupcakes.

Not to be outdone the Year 8s had their Business Enterprise week where they were learning how to set up and run a business.  On Monday the children had sessions from Young Enterprise on jobs and future employability – some of the children were very surprised that there weren’t many jobs you could do to fund a £285,000 a year lifestyle!!!  On Tuesday they started the day with a motivational speech from Scott Saunders – the only contestant to quit The Apprentice – and then split into their groups to come up with their business ideas.  Wednesday was developing their business plans and learning about marketing from our resident expert Governor – Mr Johnson.  Thursday was a team building day at Herts Mariners Base – how very corporate middle management!! Friday morning was spent developing their pitches for the all important Dragon’s Den in the afternoon.

The Year 5s and 7s had European Day of Languages activities on Thursday, where they had French, Spanish, Italian and German taster sessions – Mrs Brown was also showing off her Danish where possible as well!!

Assemblies this week focused on making a difference – the Year 8 House Officials were announced and Mrs Hesketh introduced School Council and how the children can make a difference and the importance in using your voice for good.

In the background everyone has been working tirelessly to get the school ready for Open Evening, Mr Verderame Snr has been building furniture – with some help from his apprentice and the children will help to make the school come alive on Thursday night.

Willingness to try….tick!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Enjoy a well earned rest Ralphies, we go again Monday.

Friday 8th September

September 9, 2017/in General news, Mr Spong's Blog, Uncategorized/by sadleir2021

Welcome back everybody, the start of a new academic year and for some the start of a new journey.

As I returned to school last Thursday it was a hive of activity as contractors were busily finishing off the projects that we had organised for the holidays.  I was a little concerned that we’d be ready on Tuesday for the return of the children but Mr Verderame snr and his site team worked wonders and it was all ready.  The Computing Suite has had a complete overhaul with 32 new machines and a set of portable Chrome books as we move over to become a Google school.  Classrooms and corridors have had a fresh coat of paint – we thank Mr Giles for all his hard work.  The final piece of the upgrade to be completed is the transformation of the Library into our new Learning Resource Centre – this will happen in the coming weeks.

It is an exciting time to be a part of Ralph Sadleir and we hope it will be the beginning of a bright future with our big plans.  It is always brilliant to see the excited new faces of our Year 5s as their energy and enthusiasm fills the school – and this year there are 118 of them!!  With our increase in numbers there have also had to be some changes to the school day and routines that everyone is getting used to, not least the finger print payment system for lunches – this will make it a lot easier for parents to pay and monitor what their children are eating.  Our whole school assembly asked the children to challenge themselves and make their own ‘to-do’ list for the year of what they want to achieve.

As well as all of our new year 5s we had 6 new children throughout the other year groups and 5 new teaching staff.  They join our special community, based on our values and mutual respect and will benefit from becoming Ralphies. Can you ensure, that, as parents and carers you put a great value on school and education.  Explain to your child that treating everyone with respect, being on time and in school everyday, wearing the correct uniform and working hard in school is important to you.  These are also important life skills.  The value you place on these will be the value your child holds.  I was reminded this week how lucky I am to be the Headteacher of this school when I was told of a story of how one of our Year 6s went out of her way to help a parent get her child, who was having a second morning wobble, into school.

With the increase in numbers I must stress the importance of safety at drop off and collection times, please be mindful of how you drive and considerate of our neighbours when parking – especially in Perowne Way.

Please remember that there is an opportunity to come in and meet your child’s Tutor next week.  I know you will continue to work with us, so your child can grow in confidence, with a love of learning, and a determination to be the best person they can be.

Friday 12th May

May 12, 2017/in Mr Spong's Blog/by sadleir2021

Well that’s that – SATs week done!! As a Middle School we aren’t all that fussed about them in the first place, our focus has always been the children’s progress from entry in Year 5 to exit in Year 8.  Unlike some schools we don’t dedicate our curriculum to practise papers, we don’t get rid of any creative subjects to just focus on English and Maths, we don’t make them come in on Saturday’s for extra lessons.  We do prepare them as best we can, we give those who need it or want it extra support but that’s it.  I’d much rather hear about the ‘Helping Others’, making a difference or projects they did, than whether they can begin a sentence with a fronted adverbial!  The entire Year 6 team deserved their afternoon party today and a huge thank you to the parents who donated enough sugar based products to feed an army.  Special mention to Mrs Plested for this amazing cake.

Elsewhere in school normal lessons and learning continued – thank goodness!!  Being the summer term it is so nice to see the children out on our field enjoying the space.  It wasn’t only our children utilising our space but lots and lots of first school children (and a baby muntjac deer) turned up to take part in the Cross Country.

We said thank you and goodbye to the three student teachers that have been working in Year 5 over the past term and a half.  On the other hand we will be saying hello to Mrs McLean who will be joining our staff team to teach Science from September.

So please take the advice I gave the Year sixes – life is short, enjoy it and try your best everyday.  Have a great weekend.

Friday 6th January

Welcome back and more importantly Happy New Year!!

I read somewhere recently that the night before the return to school is the same feeling for parents as Christmas Eve is for children and judging by the happy smiling faces (of parents) on Thursday morning, there may be an element of truth in that!!

The children too seemed genuinely(ish) pleased to be back – mostly so that they could show all their festive gains – and the buzz in classrooms as I’ve walked around school this week has been a real treat.  Sometimes having a short week can be a real benefit in getting the children back into the routines of school.

This term we have made a conscious effort to bring our school values to the fore and focus on one in particular.  The School Council have chosen Determination as our value for the next half term and we will be looking for examples of this from home as well.  It is a great way to start the year – by being determined – and we have asked the children to tell us when their classmates are showing this value so that they can be rewarded.determination_quotes4

Mr Taplin led this morning’s assembly and naturally the focus turned to New Year’s resolutions and the origin of our celebrations.  Somewhat depressingly he revealed that only 8% of New Year resolutions are followed through – another good reason for us to be choosing determination as our value.

On Thursday I challenged the children to ‘make 2017 the year I will…’ perhaps it is a mantra for the whole school community.

Here are a few ideas to get everyone started: live beneath your means; return everything you borrow; stop blaming other people; admit it when you make a mistake; give clothes/toys/games not used to charity; do something nice and don’t get caught; listen more, talk less; take a 30 minute walk every day; strive for excellence not perfection; be on time; don’t make excuses; don’t argue; be more organised; be kind to people; be kind to unkind people; let someone in front of you in the queue; take time to be alone; cultivate good manners; be humble; realise and accept that life isn’t fair; know when to keep your mouth shut; go an entire day without criticising anyone; learn from the past; plan for the future; live in the present; don’t let the small stuff bother you. After all it is all small stuff!

Well that should keep us all busy until February at least!!

Friday 11th November

November 12, 2016/in Mr Spong's Blog/by sadleir2021

Well there was a big announcement this week, somewhat overshadowed by a lesser one from across the pond, Ofsted have decided that we continue to be a GOOD school!!!!!!

The full letter from the Ofsted Inspector and my covering one (including my Freudian slip) can be found elsewhere on our website, please take time to read it thoroughly as it gives a fair assessment of where we are as a school – I’d be really interested to hear your reactions via the feedback tab or feedback@ralphsadleir.herts.sch.uk

It’s been a while since my last Blog and I can tell that the children have been working very hard because this week Mrs Kerner gave me a pile of Merit Certificates that was about 2 inches (or 5 and a bit centimetres) high to sign over the weekend, recipients will be announced in my assembly on Friday this coming week.

On the subject of assemblies we have had some good ones in recent weeks: a sing along with Mr Fuller to raise the dopamine levels in the brain; IAP looking at people’s favourite places to travel to; Mrs Hesketh focusing on the importance of making marginal gains – linking to our Growth Mindset culture; lastly this week we had Mrs O-D and her tutor group delivering our Remembrance Assembly culminating in our two minutes silence to show our respects for those who gave so much.  Our Year 8s have been busily selling Poppies all week to raise money for the Royal British Legion.

This week Mr Palmen with support from our Safe Guarding Governor Mrs Forbes, gave a very informative workshop on e-safety – something that is of a growing concern for me both as a parent and more worryingly the Headteacher. Without our help and support our children are at risk more than ever before and from threats that we cannot always see – education for all in this area is vital if this generation is to  grow up safely.

Be aware that it seems that all of Station Road and parts of South Road are being dug up throughout the comings weeks and enforced road closures.  We haven’t heard anything official about potential disruption but please be prepared and plan your journeys accordingly.

We have a new Twitter feed for you to follow from our Humanities Faculty – @R_SadHumanities take a look and see what it’s all about.

The RSA and I were completely overwhelmed with your generosity today with chocolate and smellies, both of those stalls will be fully stocked up on The Christmas Bazaar – which is in 2 weekends time – please come along and win all your donations back.  The usual highlight of the whole day is the world renowned ‘Bickerstaff Bottle Tombola’ we are currently in desperate need of bottles of all shapes, sizes and fillings.

‘For your sacrifice, for our freedom. We say thank you and shall never forget.’  I wear a poppy as red as can be to show that I remember, those who fought for me.

Friday 31st September

October 2, 2016/in Mr Spong's Blog/by sadleir2021

As September draws to a close the pace in school showed no signs of letting up!

This week saw our first cross curricular day – totally dedicated to developing a Growth Mindset.  The children looked at some famous failures; how to think in a Growth Mindset way; how the brain changes as we learn – neuroplasticityimg_1237 img_1242; and even an uplifting song.  In the afternoon they all got to hear a talk by Robin Launder, img_1251who is an expert on the concept.  The day didn’t stop there, we had a parents talk in the evening.  I think it is the most influential piece of training that I have received which is why I am passionate about embedding it into the culture of the school.

On Wednesday my assembly built on the work of the previous day by challenging the children to remove the word ‘can’t’ from their vocabulary and shared with them the remarkable story of Jennifer Bricker. So next time your children tell you they can’t do something then please remind them about the girl who could tumble without legs!!

Thursday saw one of the biggest days of the year – our Open Evening for prospective parents.  Mr Verderame and his site team had been working tirelessly to make the school look its best; the teachers and support staff had been planning engaging and making the school walls come to life with displays.  The evening itself was a roaring success, more parents than ever before and such a feeling of positivity but the stars of the show were the pupils of Ralph Sadleir – our greatest selling point as always!!

Our Year 7s started the football season with a win and our Year 5s had a great time at Schoolympics on Thursday morning.

I firmly believe that as a school we are the place to be and the future is exciting, thank you for being part of it – enjoy your weekend.

September 23, 2016/in Mr Spong's Blog/by sadleir2021

There are some weeks when a Blog is tricky to write because I am scratching around trying to find things that have happened in the week…this week is not one of them!!!!

The Year 8s had their Business Enterprise Week – starting with a day’s activities ran by Young Enterprise on Monday; Tuesday to Thursday morning was spent forming their companies and deciding on their products/services and then writing business plans and marketing; Thursday afternoon saw them all pitch their business ideas to the Dragons in our den.  Tuesday also saw a motivational talk by Scott Saunders – from the Apprentice.  There are some really good ideas and the children    have worked really hard and have learned a lot of real life skills. A huge thank you to Miss Hurren and Miss Devine for all their efforts in organising the week’s activities.

To ensure complete realism for Business Enterprise Week we took the Year 8s to the Young Mariners base for a Middle Management strategy away day, team building exercise today – lots of fun, luckily by the sounds of things, none of the enterprise groups are selling homemade rafts!!

The Year 6s had a fantastic time in PGL and there are loads of pictures and Mr Creasey’s daily updates are elsewhere on the website please be sure to check them out.  The remaining Year 6s had an action packed week in school doing lots of different activities to their normal curriculum.

Today is European Day of Languages, this was kicked off by an assembly from Miss Hampshire on the importance of learning languages – especially since the Brexit vote.  Ask your children what percentage of the world speak English.  The rest of the day saw them doing a range of activities that included playing boules; making Venetian masks; learning about maps of Europe; cooking crêpes; and learning numbers and simple vocabulary in French, Spanish and German.

I think that’s basically it…oh unless you count a visit from Ofsted on Tuesday!! There is not much that can be said about it at the moment as we have to wait to share their findings but all I can do is praise the children who were their usual brilliant selves; and say thank you to the parents that filled out the ParentView questionnaire. 90% of you would recommend the school, which is a fantastic endorsement but we will not rest on our laurels  and we will continue to build a school that provides the best learning opportunities and support to its pupils.

Next week is no less busy with our Growth Mindset cross-curricular day and parents’ talk and our Open Evening event.

And breathe…have a great weekend.

This week saw the 6/7/8s do a full 5 days but they seemed to cope, the 5s now seem like seasoned veterans of the school.

Clubs started this week with lots of children attending the full range of activities on offer, always happy for more to join in and get involved.

The Food Tech room was a hive of activity and the corridors were filled  with wonderful aromas from what the Year 8s were cooking – attendance didn’t dramatically drop so I’m assuming it was edible…enough!!

Mr Palmen’s assembly on Wednesday was dedicated to Roald Dahl – a worthy recipient of an Honorary Ralphie nomination; Friday’s assembly saw the announcement of this year’s House Officials.

September 10, 2016/in Mr Spong's Blog/by sadleir2021

Well that’s it week one done – hello and welcome back.

The first week brings lots of excitement and new opportunities and this week has had a real positive feel throughout the school.  The boundless enthusiasm that our new year 5s bring really energises the whole school.  As well as welcoming the incoming Year 5s we have also said hello (and welcome back) to new staff and plenty of pupils, I’m sure we will all pull together in true Ralphie fashion to help them feel part of the family!y5_d

Some of you may well have heard about a notable goodbye this week – the Year 7/8 lockers.  Despite a last minute petition from some of the pupils my resolve held fast and I shared with them my convincing arguments for getting rid #riplockers!

Assemblies this week focused on setting new targets and finding the right path and beginning your journey to your future.  Mrs McIver ended the week by sharing the story of the burkini ban in France and how people have the right to express themselves through their clothing.  However this is about free time and I had to discuss school uniform with the children: shoes NOT trainers, 1 pair of plain studs, hair tied back, shirts tucked in – unless the children want to join Mr Fuller’s new lunchtime club.

There was one more notable event this week(end), our beloved Mrs Attwood celebrates a rather significant birthday – adored by all, I’m sure you will join me in wishing her many happy returns as she is rightly spoiled by the rest of team Atwood.

Have a good weekend, rest up because we have to do it all again next week!!
