Friday 28th March

March 28, 2014/in Mr Spong's Blog/by sadleir2021

The school is definitely less crowded with some of our big Year 7’s away on their residential trip to France however we are certainly just as busy!!  The remaining Year 7’s have had an exciting and varied curriculum.  Assemblies this week came from S6 on why to avoid being a couch potato and A6 on changes.

The main focus of the week has been our Year 8’s working with Anthony Glenn on dramatising the work they have been doing in English on Romeo and Juliet, culminating in an amazing performance on Thursday evening.  They really are a talented bunch of students and I consider it a real privilege to have got to know them.  It was wonderful to see the confidence, from not necessarily children you would always expect, to go up on stage.

In sport the girls have been busiest, district tournaments for the Year 8 and 7 girls were played; whilst the Year 6 girls won the High Five netball tournament, amassing a 25-0 cumulative score over their matches.  The Year 6 boys who represent the district team had another thumping victory on Monday which stands the team in good stead for the County Cup Quarter-Final competition next week.  Special congratulations must go to Olivia D. from Year 8 who came second in the Hertfordshire Schools’ County Golf competition, Tiny Woods as I like to call her played superbly scoring 43 stapleford points.

Next week is the final week of term but there is no let up in activity – the Sport Relief Mile’s will be taking place for each year group; there is the Great Ralph Sadleir Bake-Off; an Easter egg raffle; and of course, the children’s favourite – end of term assessments!!

I will leave you with a quote from Shakespeare’s play, As You Like It, ‘Then the whining school-boy, with his satchel, And shining morning face, creeping like a snail, Unwillingly to school.’

If only he’d gone to Ralph Sadleir!!!!!!!!!!! Have a great weekend.

Friday 21st March

March 27, 2014/in Mr Spong's Blog/by sadleir2021

A belated hello from this(last) week’s Blog.  Unfortunately I was out at the National Middle School’s Conference on Friday, it was an interesting day where lots of plans for the future were discussed.

Last week saw lots of activities organised by Mrs Bingham for National Science Week, culminating with the House Quiz.  As part of the week our Year 6 team went over to GSK for an afternoon of experiments.  Joshua G. from S6 wrote a short report –  ‘While we were there, we were introduced to three very smart scientists.  They focused on the topic of solids, liquids and gases.  Two students were picked to go up and hold a block of ice and watch it melt.  As the ice was melting, they asked us at what temperature we thought it was and it was exactly 0 degrees Celsius!I really enjoyed the experiment of blowing up a glove and balloon with CO2.  The scientists put a flame near the balloon to see its reaction.  It was exciting to see the bomb with CO2 being fired above heads and across the room. The trip to GlaxoSmithKline was really interesting, fun and educational’ – certainly sounds like they had a lot of fun.

Not to be outdone Mrs Brown took four Year 8’s (Ryan W, Ben G, Kira B & Holly R) to a Maths Challenge event at Sheredes, Ryan W (SAB) had this to say ‘There were four rounds of events, the first was a table challenge where you had to answer lots of questions.  In the second round we had to work in pairs on a memory game where your partner had to draw what you described.  For the third round we had to estimate how many 1cm3 cubes would fit in a box and how far London was away from Sochi.  In the final round we had another table challenge but with different questions.’ I know Mrs Brown was really proud of how they worked as a team.
On Thursday we had children from the local First Schools here for a Tag Rugby Festival, the weather was good, the rugby was frantic and the children all enjoyed themselves.  A huge thank you to the Sports Leaders from Freman for refereeing and our Year 8’s for keeping the younger children entertained.
To round off the week Mrs Davey gave us an assembly all about empathy and there was the Inter-House Science Quiz.

Inappropriate social media websites

March 18, 2014/in General news/by sadleir2021

Dear Parent/Carer,

Recently we have had several incidents of inappropriate behaviour/language on social media sites namely, Instagram. I know many parents do keep a keen eye on their child’s internet usage but I would like to remind you that account holders for these types of sites are 13 years and over. If you are aware of any incidents of unsuitable language can you please contact the appropriate authorities and let the school know.

Due to the recent Parent Meetings and the previous English and Maths SAT workshops we feel it is no longer necessary to run another SAT meeting as planned on the school website timetable. If, however, you do want specific information please make contact with the tutor through your child’s planner.

Yours sincerely,

Robert Smith

Year 6 Pupil Progress Co-ordinator

Friday 14th March

March 14, 2014/in Mr Spong's Blog/by sadleir2021

Somewhat strangely I’m going to start this week’s Blog by going back to last week, my first Stars – an incredibly memorable evening for soo many reasons!! I was truly astounded by the sheer number of talented pupils and the quality of their performances.  A lot of thanks must also go to the hard work behind the scenes from the staff to put on such a wonderful evening.  Off the back of this one of our Year 8 enterprise groups will be recording, producing and selling some compilation albums of our children performing, more details coming soon.

Continuing on a performance theme, the school choir ably led by Miss Mason will be singing at the Royal Albert Hall this Sunday and if the singing I have heard coming from the Music Room every lunchtime this week is anything to go by then the audience are in for a massive treat.  There will be a review in next week’s Blog.

Monday was a Cross-Curricular Day, with a focus on healthy living – lots of activities based around helping the children realise that a healthy lifestyle in-corporates a good diet, positive mindset and regular exercise.

The Year 5’s continued their work on Ancient Egypt with an entire themed day where they a did pharaoh’ld amount of work – maths, science, English (hieroglyphics) and art.

Finally with a spell of decent weather we are having a glut of sports fixtures – Year 8 girls played really well against St Edmund’s College in two netball matches; The Year 8 boys came second in their group at district football; The Year 7 boys progressed through to the next round of the cup with a 1-0 win over Helena Romanes, Mayomikun E. scoring the only goal.  As well as school matches we have had some Year 6 boys – Noah P, Archie G, Luke C, Dominic G and Austen G – playing for the District U11 team. So far they have played 2 matches, losing to Potter’s Bar and beating Stevenage, with both Luke and Dominic scoring.  It is a big honour to be selected to represent the District and we are very proud of the boys!! We also had two Year 8 boys – Zach H and George B – go to trials for the U13 County Rugby team, both enjoyed the experience and learned a lot by training with the best boys from across the county.

Speaking of big honours, hopefully you all received the parent mail about the Parents’ House Football event after Easter, it is a great opportunity to get involved in the school community and help your children’s house point totals.  Please let me know either via email or through your children.

Another way to get involved will be by entering the School Council’s: Great Ralph Sadleir Bake Off in support of Sport Relief.  This will be a competition run (And judged by) the School Council – prizes for both child and adult entries will be given.  All the cake that’s left over from the (Very eager) judging panel will be then sold and all proceeds will go towards our Sport Relief fund.

And so another week comes to an end, we had a lively assembly introducing National Science Week by Mrs Bingham and a very special guest.  There were some excellent presentations on: our famous, teaching group named scientists, who will you vote for as the most influential?; on scientific discoveries like the MRI scanner; and on what the future holds – my personal favourite was flying cars.  As part of the planned activities, a group of Year 5 children (Florence S, Callum B, Oliver K, Emilia H) went to the Haileybury Science Challenge with Mrs Charlton, who said ‘ the children completed three different challenges throughout the day, one biology one physics and one chemistry. They had to work as a team to complete the tasks. They were quite difficult tasks but they worked well, read the instructions carefully and completed each task successfully! The tasks included making an electromagnet, testing urine and making oxygen.’  A huge thank you to Mrs Charlton for supporting the children through out the day, she told me how proud she was of their conduct and performance.

Remember…the roots of education might be bitter but the fruit is sweet!!

March 7, 2014/in Mr Spong's Blog/by sadleir2021

Hopefully we have seen the back of winter and Spring is sprung.  As I write this Miss Bickerstaff and myself are somewhat perplexed – it is a Friday afternoon and it’s not raining!!

This week the Year 6’s went out to Crucial Crew in Hertford where they learned about keeping safe. Rozzie M’s favourite part of the afternoon was hooking ducks, whilst trying to avoid falling in, to find out the things you can find in flood water.  She thought it was a very helpful trip.

My curricular focus this week was ICT: Year 5’s continued their work on computer control by exploring the Crystal Rainforest and creating patterns using LOGO. Whilst some also continued their email correspondence with children in Finland; Year 6 used LOGO to create repeating patterns involving sub-routines; Year 7 have been planning an E-safety film to include images, text and sound whilst Year 8 have been looking at the pros and cons of social networking, discovering that Facebook is only used by 65% of them and is not the most popular (Skype).

There were wins for Years 5 and 7 in netball and losses for both Key Stage 3 teams in football this week.  The Year 7 girls footbal team took part in the NEH District Futsal competition, taking on other local schools for the chance to compete in the County finals as part of the Sainsbury’s School Games pathway.

After losing their first game, the girls rallied and won their next match 2 – 0 with goals from Ellie Sutton and Katie Barker, helped with a fantastic display in goal from Ella M. The team clinched 2nd place in the competition and all of the girls were brilliant in representing the school.

We had an assembly on Wednesday from Mrs Hanson on Talk Maths (I will post a link to the website at a later date) a project that she has set up in Uganda.  A really worthwhile cause that we are happy to help support.

Finally today was dedicated to World Book Day (With a mathematical twist) and it was lovely to see so many well thought out costumes (Onesies for 101 bedtime stories proved popular).

wbd 2014 oTonight is my first experience of Stars and I cannot wait – the children and staff have been working soo hard, it promises to be a fantastic show.

My educational thought this week comes from the Greek philosopher Aristotle, ‘The roots of education are bitter, but the fruit is sweet.’

World Book Day – 7th March 2014

March 7, 2014/in General news/by sadleir2021

To celebrate World Book Day, our students and staff came in to school today dressed up as well known book characters, with most following a mathematical theme.

We had a group dressed as James Bond (007 being the mathematical theme), a fair few tigers from The Life of Pi (Pi is a name given to the ratio of the circumference of a circle to the diameter), several groups of characters from The Famous Five and Jacqueline Wilson’s book called Double Act. We had a lot of Dalmations and we were all a little wary of Cruella De Vil and The Queen of Hearts, but luckily we had Mary Poppins to look after us.

Other costumes ranged from Princesses, to witches, to One Direction.

Thank you to all staff and students who took the time to dress up, you all looked super ! Take a look at our Gallery page for photos.

Well done everyone !

Freman Woodwind and Brass Music Group Visit

March 3, 2014/in General news/by sadleir2021

We were very lucky to have a visit from the woodwind and brass music group from Freman College on Friday 28th February 2014.

We saw trombones, a cornet, and a euphonium played by Miss Stott (Head of Music at Freman) and a Sousaphone with some incredible drumming too.

The name of the piece was Brooklyn which had hiphop and jazz influences.

The video taken of this performance is now on the Gallery page of our website so that you can hear the fantastic skills of the musicians, please take a couple of minutes to have a listen. Here are a few photos.
