Friday 3rd June

June 4, 2016/in Mr Spong's Blog/by sadleir2021

Crikey how did we get to June already?? Well that’s five sixths of the academic year done and just 7 weeks to go. It’s hard to believe that we’ve just had the May half term, especially as it has felt more like the October half term!!

So much has happened in the last half term, Cross-Curricular Days looking at healthy life styles both mental and physical and the past; the Year 7s had a brilliant residential trip to France; the Year 8s have continued with their reading for the Rib Valley Book Awards as well as enjoying the reward trip to Thorpe Park for all their efforts during the Business Enterprise project; the Year 6s did their SATs and had an author visit; some of our teaching assistants walked through the night to raise money for breast cancer awareness and our Year 5 maths team won the regional maths competition and go forward to the county finals.

Inevitably with the last half term looming thoughts turn to the future, which ties in nicely with an upcoming Cross-Curricular theme but also preparing the Year 8s for transition to Freman and the rest of the school for their new classes/tutors.  We are also getting ready to welcome our new intake as well as open the school for an Exhibition Evening where we will be aiming to show off all the brilliant things your children do on a daily basis.  So you can see that the final term is pretty busy – not to mention the Sports Days, House Competitions, day trips and end of year assessments.

At the end of last half term we bode farewell…again…to Mrs Prince who seems to have worked almost full time at school since retiring – she will be back
more sporadically in the future I’m sure.  Mr Taplin joins us from Tuesday next week after completing his university course and we look forward to welcoming him more permanently into the ‘Ralphie’ fold.  The final Friday was used as an INSET Day where roles are reversed and the teachers become the students.  We had a session on embedding Growth Mindset theory into the ethos of the school as I am passionate about this being key to producing successful life-long learners, more of this to come in the future.

Enjoy the rest of the weekend and we will see you bright and early on Monday morning.

It’s a relief the week is finally over – Sports Relief that is!!

The School Council, led by Mrs Hesketh, organised a big bake off style competition and sale on Thursday.  There were so many amazing and delicious entries it was tough for them to judge the winners, however they were resilient and stuck to their task – congratulations go to:

Best Looking Cake – Freya W; Best Tasting Cake – Olivia R-B; Best Biscuit – Emilia G & Jess F; Overall Showstopper – Charlie A-S.

The Showstopper

The Showstopper

The big winner will be Sport Relief as we raised £275, which is enough for two children to attend primary and secondary school in Sierra Leone for a year and make a real difference in their lives – so thank you for your generosity!

image

The week started early for some Ralphies this week as the Choir, led by Miss Mason, spent the day at the Royal Albert Hall being part of the Hertfordshire Gala.  It was an amazing performance and the children were awesome! There will be a report on the day

image

Sporting focus was all about the girls this week with both the Year 7 and Year 8 netball teams competing in the District Championships and the Girls Futsal team coming 4th in the County Finals.

In school we had a whole host of Science Week activities, the Year 5s and Year 6s went out to visit Labs in action, the Year 6s especially enjoyed seeing the GSK labs and testing for banned substances.  The Year 7s and 8s took part in a satellite design project with the latter having a talk from AirbusUK about how they do it in real life.

Mrs Murfet’s assembly on Wednesday was based on her job in animal conservation before she became a teacher and her passion for Bonobos – ask your children what they are if you don’t know.  She also

talked to the children about ethics and how it can affect affect everyday life – thinking of the consequences before carrying out the actions.  Today’s assembly was designed to raise the children’s awareness of Autism as it is School Autism Awareness Week.

I’ve blinked and nearly a month has gone by!!

In that time there has been a whole host of sport with netball matches for all year groups with plenty of victories and passing double figures in goals in several of the matches – nice preparation for the District Tournaments this coming week.  Not to be out done there have been lots of District tournaments for the boys as well with the highlights being the Year 8 boys reaching the semis of the 6-a-side (Another highlight in this particular event was an ‘overhead’ kick wonder strike from Joe B!!) only conceding 1 goal in the whole thing and the Year 7 boys narrowly losing the cup final to Greneway, the Year 5s began their RS careers by beating the same school.  The Year 8 boys also just missed out on qualification to the County Finals of the rugby, being beaten by Barnwell school in the playoff – but being muddier by far!!

In school we’ve had World Book Day, the Book Fair, a Year 6 Parents’ Evening, an author visit and this week ended with Mrs Bingham introducing Science Week with an assembly and the House Quiz.  Congratulations to Wellington the winners and Freman who were Runner’s Up – thanks to the staff who gave up their lunch time to form a team and for ‘competing.’  The Year 8 maths team took part in the heats of the county Maths Challenge finishing a creditable 5th out of 20 schools.  Other assemblies have focused on the importance of words and using the right word and the importance of good attendance where I told the children that 90% (Which we’d all be happy with on any test) averaged over the four years would equate to missing half a day a week or nearly half a year of school.  I shared with them some research that showed that 17 missed days of a school a year meant a drop by one grade at GCSE’s and that if you got A*-Cs you would earn on average over £350,000 pounds more over the course of their working lives – just think of all the improved Mother’s and Father’s Day presents that would mean!!

Finally this week, the five, very brave and open minded teachers who participated in the Outstanding Teacher Intervention Programme completed their course and received their certificates and gave presentations, hopefully this is the start of the journey to improved learning for all pupils whom will pass into our school and become ‘Ralphies’.

Have a great weekend and remember the difference between try (6 Nations rugby reference) and triumph is just a little UMPH(sic)!!

Friday 12th February

February 13, 2016/in Mr Spong's Blog/by sadleir2021

There was a lot of love going on this week in school.  D6 started it all off with an informative assembly about who St Valentine waIMG_2779s
and the history of the celebration as well as the different customs around the world.  Today’s assembly extended that idea into relationships; the different types and the things you need to do to maintain them – ask your children what some of them were.  Even the kitchen staff got involved with a ‘lovely’ display.

The Year 6s have been busy this week doing some practice tests to give them some preparation for their SATs in May.  We are trying to make them as prepared as possible although the information about the new style tests and expectations coming from the Government is sketchy at best.  This week writing examples were released and when Mrs Brown and Mrs McIver took them to a moderation meeting with other teachers from other primary and secondary schools in Hertfordshire, the secondary teachers said they’d be pleased if their Year 8s wrote like that!!  Today they rounded off their week by going to Crucial Crew to learn about being safe and staying safe.  Personal safety was also a theme of the week in ICT as this linked into work around Safer Internet Day on Tuesday.

In short: the Year 5s had a brilliant treasure hunt, there were geographical board games being made, Year 8s were beingIMG_0799 stitched up – I mean were stitching up their drawstring bags in technology and were writing balanced arguments on contentious topics and the Year 7s were finishing up with fractions, decimals and percentages whilst learning about microbes.

Sportwise there were wins for the Year 8 netball teams and both the Year 7 and Year 8 football teams.  The Year 8 boys success in the National Cup was reported in the Hertfordshire Mercury this week and they are off to the south coast on the Monday we return to play their Quarter-final match – fingers crossed and we wish them well.

We had some hellos and goodbyes this week as Mrs Murfet returned from her maternity leave, sadly that means we had to say goodbye to Miss Chandler – who has made a big impact in school and we thank her for all her effort and wish her well for the future.

Sadleir (Well most of them) were also loving school today as they had earned a non-uniform day (Well, judging by the number of boys in Hype tracksuits and hoodies you’d think it was the new school uniform!!IMG_0798) by claiming merits – over 1200 by the end of the week in fact; fantastic effort and well done for claiming them all; there have been over 4500 claimed merits so far this academic year but special congratulations should go to Sophie K in Year 6 who is the first to achieve her Platinum Certificate for 60 Merits.

A good relationship is about two things: firstly appreciating the similarities and secondly respecting the differences – have a lovely weekend and week off (Parents – tag you’re it!!!!!!!!!)

Today started with Mr Palmen giving a hard-hitting assembly on e-safety and introducing Internet Safety Week in school.  He talked about ways to make sure you can stay safe online and what to do if you think something is wrong.  Perhaps the most interesting piece of information was surrounding Instagram and after revealing how many children in each year group had said they had an account he shared with us point 1 from the Instagram terms and conditions and the fact that only 24 children in school should technically have an account!!

On Wednesday we had the leaders from the The Village Youth Club deliver an assembly on democracy as well as do a little sales pitch for their sessions at the Community Centre on Sundays from 4.30pm to 6.30pm.

Today was ‘Wear it Red’ to raise money for the British Heart Foundation, which was a really worthwhile cause suggested by one of our families.

This week saw the return of the House Leagues for both football and netball in Key Stage 3.  The children take on many different roles other than just players, such as coaches, referees and even match reporters; earning bonus points depending on how well they do.  Over the coming weeks I will try to keep you updated on how things are going.  There was lots of other sport going on this week with our Year 6 girls football team coming a creditable 3rd in the District Tournament but playing some good football and having great fun.  Our Year 8 girls netball team beat Edwinstree and the Year 8 boys beat Hockerill at basketball.

There was much excitement in at least one third of Year 5 this week as following on from the cakes and cookies C5  made last week to raise money for endangered species, a rather exciting box arrived.  As a result of all their hard work they have been able to adopt a Giant Panda and a Snow Leopard from the WWF and a Barn Owl and Door Mouse from the Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust. They will receive adoption certificates for each of the animals and updates on their conservation and development.

Congratulations go to Jake P from Year 5, Daniel H from Year 6, Macey D from Year 7 and Nathan B from Year 8 who were the Ralphies of the month for January.  Special mention must also go to Sophie K from Year 6 who is the first to receive a Platinum Certificate for 60 Merits and the first House has triggered a reward for total claimed merits which they will be receiving this week.

At this point we should all spare a thought for the Year 6s ready for next week when they do their practice SATs, to counteract this they do have some exciting trips coming up…more on that to come in

later Blogs.

Have a good weekend.

Friday 29th January

January 29, 2016/in Mr Spong's Blog/by sadleir2021

The end is nigh…well of January at least, only another 11 months until Christmas!!

Last week I was at the BETT show in London looking at what technology is offering for schools in the coming years; as we try to equip the school to allow the children the best experience possible.

I must start the summing up of the week by congratulating our Year 8 boys on reaching the last 8 of the National Playstation Schools Cup with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Westley Middle School.  We await the draw on Monday to see who (Or where) we will be playing next (Mostly to decide if the minibus can make it there and back!!).

This week assemblies were handed over to Year 5 and they did a fine job!! On Wednesday B5 tried to induct an honorary ‘Ralphie’ – John Logie Baird.  They talked about his achievements and how he displayed many of our values; and so I am happy to award the inventor of the television

his honorary status.  This has given me an idea and I have challenged other tutor groups to use their class assemblies as opportunities to choose a potential inductee of their own and I am thinking of creating a display on one of the notice boards around the school.

It was interesting that the inventor of the television was chosen on the week it was revealed that children now spend more time on devices than watching

TV.  Research firm Childwise found that on average 5 to 15-year-olds were spending three hours a day using the internet, compared to 2.1 hours watching TV.

A Cambridge University study published in September suggested an extra hour a day of television, internet or computer game time in Year 10 was linked to poorer grades at GCSE.  The researchers recorded the activities of more than 800 14-year-olds. When they analysed their GCSE results at 16, they found those who had spent an extra hour a day on screens saw a fall in results equivalent to two grades overall.

A regular feature of the Blog will be a subject specific focus, starting with MFL.  The Year 5s have been creating monsters and labelling their body parts; In Year 6 the children have been working on animals and colours; the Year 7s have been planning and taking part in their speaking assessments; and Year 8s have been revising sports and leisure activities.  Miss Hampshire has been busy herself, putting up french labels all round school.

Today D5 started our day by introducing us to people who inspire them; it was a wonderful assembly with a touching mix of mums, dads, aunties and great-grandads to world famous footballers, illusionists and paleontologists.  The reasons given were considered and thoughtful, explaining why each of them were inspiring to them.  It is important to have aspirations and role models who inspire us to achieve them.  A lot of our values are skills we want to equip our ‘Ralphies’ with in order to help them achieve their dreams and be successful in life, because life is 10% what happens to us and 90% how we react to it.

So the end of the first (proper) week! Wow that extra day makes a difference!!

The Year 8s were back in full Enterprise mode on Monday, busily selling a whole range of tasty snacks at breaktime.   They are a long way to making their target figure and soon will be meeting with Miss Devine and Miss Mason to start planning the rewards trip.

Speaking of Miss Mason, she and the choir have been hard at it all week in preparation for their performance at the Royal Albert Hall.

Gymnastics has been the focus of PE this week, with plenty of group balances, cartwheels and round-offs on display in the school hall.

Congratulations must go to the Year 8 football team for reaching the last 16 of the English School’s competition with a resounding 4-0 victory over St Thomas Moore with Dom G and Luke C scoring the goals.

In Wednesday’s assembly Miss Hampshire introduced the concept of doing random acts of kindness – these weren’t necessarily limited to in school so hopefully your children will be doing these at home as well.  Today I used Andy Murray as an example of someone who had a dream and the things a successful learner does to achieve that dream – ask your children what some of them are.

“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You’re on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who’ll decide where to go…” Dr Seuss

Happy New Year to everybody, I hope you all had a fun-packed festive period.

It was lovely to see the collection of happy, smiling faces on Tuesday morning at

the start of a new term…but enough about the parents!!

A new year brings opportunities for

new goals and fresh starts and the idea of resolutions was the topic for F6’s assembly on Wednesday.

For my assembly this morning I used the focus of aspirations; and asked the children why it was important to have them. I used Steven Frayne as the example of how having a

dream can shape your future – ask your children who he is better known as.

As I walked around the school today I was startled by the appearance of some of the Year 7s who resembled Victorian chimney sweeps, it wasn’t auditions for Oliver but in fact some charcoal art. It has been a very creative start to the term with Year 8s taking on some product design in

Technology and lots of gymnastics in PE lessons throughout the school.

At Ralph Sadleir our resolutions are simple: to be proud of who we are and what we achieve.  I wish you all a very happy and healthy 2016 – only 351 days until Christmas!!

This week saw the first cross-curricular day of the year, the focus was the world around us.  The children took part in a wide range of activities; from looking round the Ralphies’ National Park; saving endangered animals; reconstructing mammals from owl pellets; making bird feeders; to redesigning Puckeridge.  The children get to learn new and use a whole range of skills in non-traditional learning activities; they also have lots of fun.  A huge amount of credit goes to the staff who plan, source and deliver these sessions; a good indicator of how hard they work is that there needs to be an afternoon break – for a caffeine and sugar kick – which the children believe is for them!

On Thursday a group of Year 5 and 6 children took part in a tag rugby festival in Bishops Stortford, inspired by the World Cup (Perhaps not necessarily England) they all really enjoyed their games and put in some strong performances.  Also this week our 5 and 6 girls played netball matches against St Edmunds.

Next week is the final week of the half term, unbelievable how time flies – I must have been having fun – with two important dates in the school diary – Year 8 Parents’ Evening and an INSET training day for staff on Friday, which means school is closed to children.

Friday 9th October

October 9, 2015/in Mr Spong's Blog/by sadleir2021

Back in the 90’s the film Four Weddings and a Funeral launched the careers of a generation of British actors/actresses; fast forward to 2015 and in school this week we had Four Engineers and a couple of Authors to potentially inspire the future careers of our Ralphies.

As part of this year’s Hertford Children’s Book Festival we had two visits from authors.  On Monday Matt Whyman came in to speak to the Year 7s and Year 8s about his latest series The Savages, a family with some interesting tastes!! Then on Wednesday, Jonny Zucker completely engrossed the whole of Key Stage 2 talking about his life, his books and how became a writer.   The children really enjoyed both chats and Isaac and Dexter even got to interview Matt Whyman for a podcast on the HCBF website.  A huge thanks to Mrs Woollard our librarian for co-ordinating and organising the events, which really help to enrich our English curriculum and inspire our children to pick up a book or pen.

Today was all about Science, Technology and Maths as we invited four engineers in as part of Stem Day.  As part of the day’s activities the Year 7s got to hot seat and ‘speed date’ the engineers to find out what they did and the equipment they use – oh yes engineers have lots of cool gadgets (toys)!! Mrs Bingham and Mrs Brown, who coordinate the activities were really pleased with the day, especially as the children asked lots of questions about being an engineer and not just how much they earn!!

It was a big and busy week for the Year 8s: Monday saw the beginning of Enterprise trading and the Dining Room resembled a busy market with plenty of money exchanging hands; not content with filling the Dining Room with delicious smells they also set about Food Tech as well, making mini-fruit cakes – some of which might have even made it home; Thursday saw the boys win their next match of the English Schools’ Cup, beating Chigwell 4-0; just for good measure they also went on a trip today to a green energy site, including a trip up to the top of a wind turbine; they will definitely sleep well this weekend. However this was not all they had to do because on Monday and Wednesday they got to be tour guides for our prospective parents as we tried to show the school off to the next generation of Ralphies.  The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive and all of the children involved really were our greatest selling point.  Then on Wednesday the roles were reversed as many of our families went up to Freman to tour round on their Open Evening.  I have to admit that walking round it felt like home from home as so many of our former Ralphies were being used as guides or taking part in activities.

In my speech on Monday night I spoke of how privelidged I felt to be the Headteacher of Ralph Sadleir School and seeing the community come alive that evening really strengthened that feeling but also filled me with great pride.
